Florence Like a Local — Why Your Guide Makes All the Difference

By Sophie Bowden

Choosing the right guide can truly make or break your travel experience. It's your guide who brings a destination to life — turning landmarks into stories and streets into living history. At G&T, we believe exceptional guiding is at the heart of every trip, which is why we invest so much care in selecting and working with some of the very best guides around the world. Florence was a perfect example of this in action.

A fresh look at Florence, Italy

Exploring Florence Beyond the Tourist Trail

We had the most incredible private guided tour of Florence with Angela — and she completely changed how we saw the city. Warm, knowledgeable, and full of insider know-how, Angela took us off the usual crowded routes, threading us through quiet alleys and tucked-away courtyards where Florence revealed a different side: quieter, older, and utterly enchanting.

Of course, the iconic landmarks were very much on the agenda too — and all the better for having Angela's expert context alongside them.

At the Cappelle Medicee (Medici Chapels), she brought the story of the powerful Medici family vividly to life, explaining how Florence's most influential dynasty came to rest beneath some of the most astonishing works of Renaissance art and architecture in the world. From there, we made our way to the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore — the city's breathtaking cathedral — where Angela shared fascinating detail on the engineering brilliance behind Brunelleschi's iconic dome and the architects who made it possible. Ponte Vecchio and the Magic of the Arno

Angela also made sure we didn't miss the famous Ponte Vecchio. Yes, it's busy — but it's absolutely worth it. Those colourful little shops hanging over the Arno make it feel like stepping straight into a Renaissance painting, and the views along the river are simply stunning.

The Best View in Florence: Piazzale Michelangelo

One of Angela's standout tips was the walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo, perched on a hill on the south bank of the Arno. The climb is worth every step. At the top, you're rewarded with the most breathtaking panoramic views of the city — the kind that make for perfect photos, and a few quiet moments just drinking it all in. If you only do one thing beyond the main sights, make it this.

Where to Eat and Drink in Florence

A truly great guide knows the food scene as well as the history, and Angela delivered on that front too. For dinner, Regina Bistecca was an absolute highlight — exceptional cocktails followed by the most indulgent steak with truffle sauce. For sundowners with a view, the Loggia Roof Bar is unmissable: sip incredible cocktails while watching the sun sink below Florence's rooftops. Absolute magic.

Why the Right Guide Changes Everything

Beyond the sights, Angela gave us such a rich understanding of Florentine history that it made the rest of our trip far more meaningful. That's exactly what great guiding does — it doesn't just show you a place, it helps you truly understand it.

If you're heading to Florence, find Angela. You'll see a side of the city you'll never forget. 💖
